Elephant Walk got Whirled Away

**all items purchased by me

I've got a very old mani to show you.  On the bright side, my pinkie nail has grown out to where I like to polish again so I'll soon be back to showing more recently available polishes.  At least I got some of my older mani combinations posted while I was waiting for it to grow out.  I did paint my nails a few times, but didn't take any pictures for the blog.  I'm also trying to figure out how to get good pictures with the new camera - I just about always take photos of my right hand, but with the new camera, all the buttons are on the right side so... it's a learning and experimenting process.

Back to the nails.  Although both of the colors are old limited edition polishes, it wouldn't be hard to get a similar look using ones that would be available now from various brands.  I do remember that I put this on not a whole long time after I bought Whirled Away; I just, for some odd reason, never posted it.

The base color is China Glaze Elephant Walk.  I most likely used a base coat, which at that time may have been Pro FX Fiberized Ridge Filler.  I honestly don't remember what quick dry top coat I would have been using at the time.
China Glaze Elephant Walk is a nice medium gray with a touch of green to it.  I don't remember anything about how it applied.  It does have a little bit of a hidden shimmer to it.  This came out in the Fall 2012 On Safari collection.
And I added a coat - probably dabbed on - of China Glaze Whirled Away on top.  To me, it looks like it took quite a bit of playing with the glitters to get a somewhat even look.
China Glaze Whirled Away has a clear base that isn't the easiest to work with.  I remember both on my nails and on my swatch wheel I really had to work to get the glitter off the brush and onto the nail.  I also did some fiddling with the long black bars so they wouldn't hang off the edge.  I don't remember how the large white hex glitters laid on my nails.  This came out in the 2012 Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away collection.
If you wanted to recreate this, all you would need is a basic gray and a black and white glitter topper.  There's several of those available right now (Salon Perfect, Hard Candy, Maybelline) but the glitter sizes would be different.

On a side note, I have a new goal: no beauty purchases for the rest of the month except for the 20th (event at Nordstrom).  That's about 3 weeks; I should be able to make it, right?  The Mister was complaining a bit today about my frequent Ulta trips.  I have plenty (more than plenty) of polish and makeup to use, play with and review.

Do you like black and white glitters?  Do you prefer when the glitters are smaller or larger like in today's post?  What's your favorite color to put under black & white glitters?  How do you keep yourself from constantly buying new pretties?
