Review - Physicians Formula Eye Definer Felt-Tip Eye Marker

**all items purchased by me

In an effort to produce more product reviews, I thought I'd review an eyeliner I've been using off and on for the last 2 months today.  The eyeliner up for review is the Physicians Formula Eye Definer Felt-Tip Eye Marker in Ultra Black.

This particular liner costs somewhere around $7, depending on where you purchase from, of course.  I believe that I purchased mine on sale (either a Rite Aid or CVS weekly sale).  For being part of such an expensive-for-drugstore line, it should have performed better.
I've only had this open for about 2 months, and honestly, the entire time it did not impress me at all.  I don't wear makeup every day and I didn't always use this liner, but it's already essentially dried out.  I just did a quick swatch on my hand while typing this and it's light gray.  Now, I have had this for quite a while waiting in my back-up supply, but that is housed in a "gladware" container away from air.

From the first day that I used it, I had issues.  I tried to wear it to complete an eyeshadow look a few times, and each time I couldn't get a consistent line...especially if I attempted to use the tip.  When I laid the side of the marker against my eye, it kind of worked, but then it would pick up the eyeshadow I had on which would make the liner not transfer anymore.  It worked best (and even then, not so well) when I had no eyeshadow on my lids at all so that it couldn't get any powder products stuck to the marker.  I had to constantly shake the pen to try to get the liquid to the tip (and I stored it tip down).  The last time that I used it, before declaring it finished, I couldn't get a solid line and when I went to apply more, it removed what little I did get down the first try.
Here's some abbreviated box claims and my thoughts for each:

  • claims 24 hour wear - nope.  It faded away and flaked off somewhere between 8 and 10 hours.
  • claims the most intense, bold shades that dry instantly - no and yes.  Definitely not an intense black shade, but it did dry quickly (but don't go over the same line twice - it will lift the color back off).
  • won't smear, smudge or fade - yes, yes and nope.  I didn't notice any smearing or smudging but it definitely faded off (as stated above, somewhere between 8 and 10 hours).
  • ultra-gentle formula easily removed - yes.  It did remove easily with my CVS Eye Makeup Remover oil-free.

Do I recommend this liner to anyone?  No, I do not.  I'm not sure what brand of "marker style" liquid liner is good, but this is definitely not it.  I have yet to have any luck with marker style liners.  I have heard good things about the Physicians Formula Eye Booster liner (around $11), but I haven't tried that one out yet.

Do you prefer marker style liquid liner or brush tip?  What's your favorite brand?  I'm open to suggestions since I really do like the look of liquid liner...
