It's a Sad Time Right Now...

I'm just posting a quick note about where I've been for the last few days, and probably the next couple of days as well...or until I feel like being inspired again...

Last week, after a drawn-out battle with an illness, my grandfather passed away on Thursday.  It's been pretty rough on the entire family and me, even though we knew he was deteriorating.  It helps to know that he isn't suffering anymore and is on his new journey.  After being with Grandma and the rest of the family the last couple of days, today is the calling hours and then tomorrow will be the actual funeral.  It's going to be very hard....

My aunt just recently showed me a picture of myself and him when I was somewhere around 2 years old, and this has become my new favorite picture
Grandpa and I
somewhere in time around 1984

RIP Grandpa, 1932-2012

Disney Princess Inspired Nails

So today I was trying to figure out what to post about, and decided that I would put up a nail look that I was inspired to do a while ago.  I think this would be perfect for if you (or your little girl) wants to dress up as Princess Jasmine since the colors are directly inspired by one of her outfits.

Let's have a look at the progression of this mani:
Step 1 (after base coat, of course)
2-3 coats of Essie Good as Gold
Thick coat (plus a little dabbing) of Sally Hansen Diamond Strength White Veil - shown is only on the ring finger, but the finished look is with it on all fingers

Step 2
Thick coat (plus a little dabbing) of Love & Beauty (Forever 21) in Crystal/Turquoise

Step 3
2 coats Revlon Colorstay in Amethyst for somewhat wide funky tips
Also, at this stage you can see that I've added S.H. White Veil to the rest of my nails

Step 4
Make them all match
Top off with a coat of Gelous (waited about 10 minutes before applying)
Then a quick dry on top of that after another few minutes

If I do this again, then I would tape off where I want the tips to be so there isn't glitter under the purple causing bumpiness and thickness.  That's my main note that I made when I finished the look.  My other thought is that the S.H. White Veil isn't necessary; it's just there because I was playing around with Good as Gold before inspiration struck.

Let's see my inspiration:
Purple...check.  Gold necklace...check.  Turquoise jewel/threads through fabric...check

Sally Hansen White Veil is a limited edition polish, as well as Essie's As Good As Gold...but the Essie is probably still available at many stores that got the collection in.  Love & Beauty/Forever 21 polishes are hit and miss as to whether you'll come across the same ones again.  Revlon's Amethyst is (I believe) a core color.

I do have some other ideas, but I'm not feeling the inspiration to actually put polish to nail....  What do you think of my Princess Jasmine inspired nails?  Let me know!

Influenster Beauty Blogger VoxBox 2012 Contents & Initial Thoughts

I was so excited to find out that I was chosen to receive the Beauty Blogger BoxBox that I was practically jumping up and down with excitement!  And now I've recently received my Beauty Blogger VoxBox 2012 from Influenster with new or new to me products and it's time to share with you all what I received for review.

When my box arrived, I was both excited and a little concerned.  Excited because it was definitely heavier than my Summer Beauty VoxBox.  And concerned because there was something rolling around in the box so I was worried something had broken.  But when I opened the box, all was whole.
I received quite a variety of products, from hair to makeup to fragrance & a candle.  I do have to admit that there is one item that I'm not sure how well I'll be able to test and make a review on.
I took my pictures in categories, so first up is the makeup products:
Kiss Ever Pro Lashes starter kit in style 05
NYC Individual Eyes eyeshadow quad + primer & illuminator in the shade 0156-08 Dark Shadows
I was very excited by the lash kit as I've never tried falsies before.  A little Yay!! even popped out of my mouth when I saw them.

As for the eyeshadow palette, I was happy I got makeup, BUT I actually bought the exact same palette when it came out last year for the Halloween season, so I wished I had received a different palette.  This particular one will probably go in the back-up product drawer and I will use my older one to re-test & review.

Next group of products sent for testing is in the hair category:
Goody Simple Styles Spin Pin for dark hair
Not Your Mother's Kinky Moves Curl Defining Hair Cream

As for the Spin Pins, I'm really not sure I'll even be able to test these myself as my hair is short - around the middle of my neck, but not a consistent length least the color is right.  I'll try, though.

For the Not Your Mother's, I really wish I would have received the other formula (Smooth Moves Frizz Control) since my hair doesn't really curl - it does slight waves, but mostly just gets big if it air dries.  I straighten my hair pretty much every time I wash it, either just blowing it out as straight as I can &/or flat ironing it.  I will try this out for the frizz-control aspect of the formula.  I might purchase the Smooth Moves to see how they compare for frizz control.

Home fragrance items:
White Barn 1.3 oz mini candle in Black Pepper Bergamot from Bath & Body Works
Coupon towards a candle purchase from Bath & Body Works
I've never actually purchased a candle from there (shocking!) so I'm looking forward to seeing how well scented this is (there is another scent I smelled there one day that was sooo gooood).  This particular scent, I can't decide if I like it or I don' does remind me of something, I'm just not sure what.  Maybe I'll figure it out when I actually burn it (where's that lighter?).  I had better hurry up & decide if I want another scent in the big-boy size before the coupon expires.

I received one body spray fragrance from a brand I've never heard of before:
Vitabath Fragrance Mist with moisturizing Vitamin E in the scent In Bloom.  The lid to this is what I was hearing rolling around - it had popped off in shipping.
I did open the bottle and wasn't so sure about the smell...but I'll give it a chance.  Maybe I'll like the scent after it has time to dry down on the skin.

And the last item in my box:
EBoost Daily Health Booster in all-natural orange flavor.
Perfect timing for this little sample as the weather is all over the place (it's Ohio - wait 10 minutes and it'll change).  Yes, that is an actual saying around here.  So on one of those really crazy weather days, I'll be ripping this open & seeing how it does.

Have you used any of these products before?  Did you like them?

I was sent these products complimentary for testing purposes from Influenster when I mention these products online.

**My opinions are entirely my own - one (or more) of these products I have used before and purchased with my own money**

Small Polish Haul! featuring OPI, China Glaze & Color Club

So, I was thinking about what to post today, when I realized that on my twitter account, I promised an upcoming beauty supply haul soon, and that was...oh, over a week ago.  I actually bought everything 2 weeks ago and it took me several days to get around to photographing everything.  I need to make notes on when I want to do things or know, get more organized.  Huh...maybe one of these days.

Anyway, I had my mom with me and since I was her "chauffeur", she had to go where I went - lol.  We visited a couple of beauty supply stores that day, one being (of course) Sally Beauty Supply since they were running the famous 50% off clearance prices that weekend, and we visited North Coast Beauty Supply (the store that I ranted about a few months ago).

So, let's see what all I got from Sally's:
New metal hair sectioning clips and China Glaze Make A Spectacle
Make A Spectacle (from the Wicked collection) is unique to my collection, so I wanted it & had to have it.  I wanted to get Immortal, too, but that Sally's was out of it.

And now, let's see what I got from North Coast.  This time the experience was...better?....for lack of a better word.  Both workers ignored us, except for noticing that we were looking at the China Glaze gift pack and one said the individual bottles were up by the register.
Left to Right:  OPI DS Classic ; China Glaze Immortal ; Color Club Gift of Sparkle
I had seen swatches of OPI Classic on a blog recently and went "Ooo I want!" and got lucky enough to spot this in the display.  This one was a pain to get good pictures of.
China Glaze Immortal was one of the polishes that I was most interested in getting from the Wicked collection and was able to snag it here (and for cheaper than Sally's).
Color Club Gift of Sparkle (from the 2012 Winter Affair holiday collection) attracted my eye with its pretty holo sparkle in it.

Did you manage to get any of the China Glaze Halloween collection polishes?  Any other polishes that you didn't know you wanted until you saw?

Nail Prettiness in Orly Preamp

I realized earlier that I haven't posted what's been on my nails lately, so I thought today I would put up a nail post.  This was one of 2 polishes I picked up at full price from the Electronica collection.  I wore this pretty polish back in September.  I haven't been doing my nails a whole lot lately since for some reason, most of my nails have cracked, torn, or broke so at one point more than half had nail patches on and I didn't want to mess them up by using acetone to remove polish very lots of naked nails for the last 2-3 weeks.

Now, I know that on Sunday, I posted that I was having problems with an Orly polish, but for some reason, this Orly worked well over my normal base.  Maybe it has something to do with the more flake-shaped shimmer.  This is 2 coats of Orly Preamp over my usual base of Bridge the Ridge.  I used a quick dry top coat before pictures.

My hands must have been cold in this shot since the skin is all red & splotchy.
But look at all the pretty shimmers!

Preamp is a pretty rosey-pink with a hint of purple to it.  Contained in the pretty pinkness are golden-pink flakey-shaped shimmers that make this baby glow.  If I remember right, this did dry slowly on me (I'm telling you, Orly formulas and me do not get along), so I put on Sally Hansen Diamond Flash top coat (and got a topcoat bubble).  I got a few days wear out of this, but forget how many exactly.

This polish is the one I wanted most when I started seeing swatches of it come up through all the blogs I'm subscribed to.  At the first Sally's I stopped at, it was already gone...I persevered. I went to a second Sally's, intent on my mission.  I saw that baby sitting on the display and snatched it up, along with the other interesting polish in that little collection!

Did you pick up any of the shades from when the Electronica collection came out?

CVS Haul featuring Wet 'n Wild!

Today I'm sharing my latest CVS haul, which I wanted to get up quickly since for this week, CVS is running a buy one get one free sale on Wet 'n Wild.

While I have essentially all the eyeshadows that Wet 'n Wild offers, I didn't have as many Megashield lipsticks as I wanted (especially in darker, Fall/Winter appropriate colors), given how much I like the formula of that particular line.  I decided to fix that during the sale and completed the line (except for one, which was smushed into the cap at the store).

Here's what I got:
Wet 'n Wild Megashield lipsticks in:
That's Berry Beautiful, Make Me Blush, Ring Around the Rosy, Pink Slip, Arrest Me Copper
Mega Eyes Defining Marker in 869 Blackest Black
I've never tried this one, so I'm looking forward to seeing how well it works.

I got 2 of my favorite eye makeup removers - CVS brand Eye Makeup Remover Oil-Free
These were on sale, buy 1 get 1 50% off.  Plus I had a $2 off CVS brand beauty purchase coupon and a $.50 off coupon earned from the beauty club, so I basically paid about $.25 for the second bottle!
I did notice that the cap has been changed so the chance of accidentally pouring out too much product should be diminished.

Are you planning on picking up any new Wet 'n Wild goodies during this amazing sale?  If you are, what are they?

Miscellaneous Monday Logo Debut!

It's time for Miscellaneous Monday again and this time, I'm debuting my logo I made for it! (If I can type right, my fingers are all confused today...)

Anyway, new logo!:
I think it's quite adorable and makes it seem like we're buddies getting ready to have a casual conversation about, well...anything!

I do have another variation on this one that might appear from time to time, and if I get inspired I might do one that is more like a banner...and if I get really inspired, even different ones for holidays.  If you're curious, I edited and combined a couple of images, and then labeled and watermarked it.  This took me a couple of hours, at least, to get the Minnie right since she was actually on a black background and I had to get it looking like she really is sitting on the edge of the cabinet, anxiously awaiting some gossip (I'm really tired for some reason so apparently my mind is being a bit silly).  I'd say I did pretty well for not having much experience in the way of creating images.

What do you think of my logo?

Polish Frustrations...Any tips?

Today I was planning on doing a new nail look that would be appropriate for Halloween..."was."  I got frustrated.  My plan was to use an Orly Mysterious Curse, and then use a stencil made out of painters' tape and put a little white ghost on...

However, I had major frustration.  After 2 coats on all my nails over my usual base coat, I had major bubbling on every single nail.  Color me unhappy.  I decided to plug on and try my little ghost idea.  That so did not work at all.  I had a hard time getting the tape to stick so I ended up with streaky white blobs.  That stayed on my nails for, oh, all of 1 minute - about enough time to close up the polishes, throw the tape away and open the bottle of remover.

After I took Mysterious Curse (and my blobs) off, I put on Orly's Buried Alive but with no base coat.  I don't have any bubbles, so I'm pretty sure Orly doesn't like my favorite base.  I hesitate to try this with Mysterious Curse since it is so dark and I really don't want to deal with stained nails (if that happens with that polish?).

So, my question is this:  If you use Orly polishes, what base coat do you use?

Project "Finish this Stuff," part 12

Today I'm doing a little something different on my project "finish this stuff."  Instead it will products that are trashed but not finished.  I've been in the mood lately to clean out from just about everywhere and I came quite a few beauty things that are all deserving of seeing the trash can without even trying to finish the product first. I can't do things like this often because a lot of times I feel guilty that I bought something and then never used it before it was really past its expiration date. Darn self-imposed guilt trip. :(

Anyway, let's see what met the trash can recently.

Some items are really old and should not be used :
3 facial masks in different scents - didn't notice any difference before and after using, so I rarely used them and then it was way past the expiration date (a few years past, oops).

Some items don't work at all for me:
Mary Kay Hand Cream with  spf 4 mini tube - separated and felt really watery when trying to apply (also fairly old)
Elf Zit Zapper - did absolutely nothing for me

Some items dried out before I could even use them once:
L.A. Colors Color Craze nail polish minis in a gold glitter and silver chunky glitter

And this facial tool thing (I don't even remember what brand it is), just plain old quit working after about 2 uses.  I even tried brand new batteries on more than one occasion.

Do you ever come across items that you just toss instead of attempting to use up?  Do you feel guilty that you bought items that never got used before tossing?

Spotted, Hauled & Swatched! Wet 'n Wild Party Rocks

Today I'm bringing another installment of "Spotted, Hauled & Swatched" featuring the Wet 'n Wild Limited Edition Party Rocks nail polish collection.  I've also got pictures of the 8-pan eyeshadow palettes of the limited edition Where's the Party collection.  I found both of these displays at a different store that I rarely go to, but just had to check out this time.  I went to Discount Drug Mart (and now have the store's theme song running through my head).

First, the eyeshadow palettes:

(Top left) Shimmer The Night Away
(Top right) Drinking A Glass of Shine (previously released in 2011 as I <3 Matte)
(Bottom) Sparkle Til Morning

2 of the palettes do contain many shades that are already available in other forms from Wet 'n Wild.  As of right now, I'm not positive on how many of the shades are already out in some way, but I'll be investigating that further (might do a follow up blog, if that would be interesting/helpful).

Onto the polish:

Left to right: Can-Can You Hang the Mistletoe, Dancer is the Best Reindeer,
Happy Holidaze!, Teasy Peasy, Bling it On!

Swatch time!  One coat of each polish (except for Stars & Stripes which is one coat and then some stars dabbed on).
Left to right: Can-Can You Hang the Mistletoe, Dancer is the Best Reindeer, Happy Holidaze!,
 Teasy Peasy, Bling It On!
Lower right corner is Stars & Stripes (re-released under new name)

I didn't try to build any of the new polishes up to opacity as I plan on just using them as glitter topcoats.  Dancer and Teasy Peasy (and Stars) are all in clear bases.  The other 3 are in very sheer (maybe jelly) bases; the glitters in these 3 have 2 sized of glitters that also have some holographic-ness to them.

The 6th shade has already been released as Stars & Stripes, so I didn't get that one. But here's a picture of my bottle of Stars & Stripes for if you missed it during the summer release.  I forgot to snap a pic of this pretty's new name (let's be honest, my hands were full with everything else I was getting).

Do you see anything you want to get?  Let me know if you'd like to see some comparisons (I think there may be a few polish dupes to other lines/brands).  Also let me know if you want me to compare the palettes to the core line of eyeshadows from Wet 'n Wild.

2012 Pumpkin Polish Swatches!

**all items purchased by me

I've been busy shopping trying to find new long sleeve tees, new boots, and a new coat the last couple of days and have managed to completely wear myself out.  It is definitely time to finish the transition to Fall clothes...the nights are getting so cool it makes you wish you were wearing a winter coat.

But for today's post, I'm going to show swatches of Halloween polishes that I picked up at Rite Aid.  These little guys are known as the "Pumpkins."  I, however, didn't buy the actual pumpkin shaped bottles this year (except for one, but I'll get to that).  I bought a 5 pack of mini sized regular shaped bottles.  I believe the set was around $6.  I had debated with myself over buying the individual bottles of the colors that really interested me (purple glitter, teal/magenta glitter, and pink glitter) but then decided that buy the time I would buy 3, I would have the whole set paid for (and get more colors by getting the set).  Since I have so many glitters in my collection already, I knew that I wouldn't be in danger of using up minis...and the minis are so much easier to line up in the drawer.

None of these have names.

 Swatches (one coat each):
  • #1 is a sheer hot pink with irridescent glitters and microglitters
  • #2 is purple hex glitters in a clear base
  • #3 is primarily bright teal blue hex glitters with some magenta-purple hex glitters
  • #4 is superfine glitter in primarily rosey pink with gold; there's also some bright pink glitter sprinkled in
  • #5 is actually different from the orange glitter one that came out last year.  This year's has orange and black bar glitters, orange microglitter, and small orange hex glitters.  Last year was just orange and bar glitters in one bottle or orange bar and orange hex glitters in another bottle; neither had the microglitter.

And this is what the actual Pumpkin bottle looks like:
I liked the pink and gold superfine glitter polish so much,
I bought the full size of it the next time I saw it at Rite Aid.

There was also a set of neon-looking colors, but they didn't interest me.  Later on (probably a couple weeks or the start of November) these little pumpkins will transition over to the "Snowmen" polishes so we'll see what comes out then.  If you want to know the maker of this line, it is Blue Cross Beauty Products.  I recently discovered that Blue Cross Beauty is also responsible for the Color Zone polishes that show up at TJ Maxx.

Have you purchased any of the Pumpkins from this year (or prior years?)  Which ones?

Miscellaneous Monday...DIY Disney Decorated Gems

I'm back after an unexpected break!  I got an emergency call on Friday that I needed to take my mom to a specialist for an eye problem, which pretty much killed most of the day and by the time I got home, I was done.  Saturday and Sunday had to be spent cleaning up and putting away all the outside "toys" to prepare for Fall and Winter.  That project is almost done...and just in time too since we've already been seeing some frost on the ground here.  Brrr.  At least we didn't get any snow yet like the forecaster said some areas could.

Anyway, on to today's post.  I've got a different craft project for today's Miscellaneous Monday.  All you need are some of those decorative glass gems, Scribbles paints in assorted colors, optional stencils, and some ideas.
I used a border punch I have that punches Mickey's head, the letter "M" and Mickey's glove (as well as a couple of stars) for the glove, head, and M (in the second row).  I tried to punch it out on tape and use as a stencil but it didn't quite work out so I stared at and then freehanded on the gem itself.
Mickey's shorts are free-handed on, just using a picture as a pattern.
I found a picture of Mickey in the Pook-a-Looz/Cutie style
And of course, a bunch of mini Mickey heads (3 dots each).

For the Minnie grouping, I freehanded on a big pink bow with white polka-dots (first gem, top row) and I attempted Minnie's pink skirt (last gem, top row).  I did Minnie's head with an offset pink bow and did a more vintage-inspired with her red bow in the middle on another marble.  I also did a cartoon-y daisy that some of my older collectible Minnies are wearing.  The purse is inspired by a toy - I even tried to layer on so it has more of a 3-d effect for the purse flap.

Lastly, I have Mickey's head with a heart and I tried to do Goofy's hat (looked at a picture online).

I'm not sure what exactly these can be used for, but I was inspired to make them.  They do look cute mixed in with little collectible figurines, but they kind of disappear on dark shelves.

Do you ever make anything you have no idea what you're going to do with?

Mini Haul from The Limited!

Today I've got a few items that I purchased from the Limited to share.

I bought this cardigan towards the end of September, right about the time that Express started up their clearance sale.  I got a few things for the Mister from Express, but this is what I got for me:
It's a gray 3/4-length sleeve button up cardigan.  The waist on it is fitted for a more feminine look.
It was around $17 on clearance.
I didn't have a gray cardigan yet and this will be perfect for the cooler Autumn days.

Then a couple of days ago, I got an email from the Limited that it was the last day of their 40% off sale, so after checking out the site and seeing a few things I liked, I headed to the mall and found both things that I liked, plus one more.
This is from the Limited's Forenza line.  I really like this shirt, except the sleeves are way too long (probably a good 3 inches) so I have to push the sleeves up.  I guess designers think that everyone has really long arms...what about all the short/petite people?!
I've really been into bows lately :-)
I saw the necklace on the site, and had seen it in the store before, so I knew I would get it if it was still there.  I don't recall seeing the ring on the site, but when I saw it in store, I knew I had to get it too.

Anything that you've been really drawn to lately?

Sally's Beauty Halloween Display Sightings!

It's time to really concentrate on getting Halloween display sightings up so today will be what I saw at Sally's Beauty Supply about a week ago.  All these pretties were on an endcap instead of the usual place located by all the rest of the polishes.

Let's start with the 2 little display's from Sally Girl.  These polishes are all of 99 cents each.
Nothing too groundbreaking here.  The left display has 2 rows of black and 2 rows of orange.  The right display is/was full of nothing but "Get Glowing," the requisite Halloween glow in the dark polish.

Let's move on to Orly.  This little display has 3 new glitters from the Glam FX line (hate the price on these glitters), as well as Orly's usual Liquid Vinyl black.
Left to right:  Liquid Vinyl, Monster Mash, Right Amount of Evil, and R.I.P.

And let's wrap up with China Glaze.  This collection could be purchased by the bottle or in a 4-pack.
Top row, left to right: Glitter Goblin, Immortal, Roguish Red
Bottom row, left to right:  Make A Spectacle, Cast A Spell, Bizarre Blurple
And the 4-pack contains Roguish Red, Glitter Goblin, Bizarre Blurple and Ghoulish Glow

There are 2 or 3 from China Glaze that I kinda have my eye on.  I'll have to look up swatches to decide for sure, and it's not my favorite to pay full price for them so I may take my chance and see if any are still around after Halloween (or whenever these get marked for clearance).  I most likely won't be picking up any of the Orly's since they aren't colors I wear much (that could change if I see those on clearance &/or I come across swatches that change my mind).

Do you see anything that catches your eye?  Or does something look familiar, either from in the past, in the current core line, or even a dupe to another brand?  Let me know!

Miscellaneous Monday...the Last of 2011 Necklace Designs

Happy October!  I can't believe it's the first day of October already.  Where did this year go?  It's also Monday again, so time for another edition of Miscellaneous Monday.  Today's post will be featuring the last of the jewelry that I made in 2011.  Man, am I behind on these or what.

Sorry the pictures aren't showing the colors very well.  I need to play around with where and on what I take the pictures.
This piece has a purple jeweled pendant with a bit of a black raised design around the jewel.  It has 2 lengths of a chunky black chain.  The pendant and chain were both from Jo Ann Fabrics.

This piece is one of my favorites.  The pendant is bronze and teal (which isn't showing up well).  There is a center teal colored stone surrounded by 2 layers of bronze swirls, a teal enamel ring and then more bronze.  I have it hanging from some bronze chain with a shorter heavier second chain to make it look like the piece is layered. The pendant also came with 2 little bronze tear-drop shaped medallions that I turned into a pair of earrings (bottom right picture) with the help of some bronze and blue seed beads, bronze chain and fishhooks.  I bought all the materials summer 2011 at Walmart.

What do you do for a hobby?  Any colors you think would work well together for a piece of jewelry?  Let me know...
